Position Summary

eX2 Technology is searching for an ambitious individual who is an experienced Sr. Network Development Engineer with SDN/NFV, MEF, IP/MPLS Experience.  This position will be responsible for research, equipment/vendor recommendation, evaluation, and selection of Ethernet hardware/software elements for the overall Network Architecture.  This position oversees the development and definition of detailed system specifications of the Ethernet product and service requirements in support of new product rollouts including Architecture design and vendor selection.  This individual may be required to help develop capital budgets and will coordinate with NOC/Operations, Provisioning, and regional engineering teams to integrate new elements services into the Network.  This individual will also evaluate and recommend new Ethernet technologies for deployment in eX2’s customer networks and document the recommendations.

  • Ethernet technology planning and evaluation as it pertains to Architecture design including equipment selection, systems integration, requirement specifications, requirement gathering, design selection, alternative recommendations, costing and scheduling.
  • Next generation technology planning for network deployments.
  • Develop guidelines and specifications for the proper configuration and usage of the Ethernet Network and its components.
  • Provide financial analysis on proposed Ethernet equipment.
  • Performing technical research on new equipment.
  • Determine the most cost effective way to provide additional Network services.
  • Constantly monitor and review new Ethernet technologies required by the organization.
  • Capturing the impact of software/hardware upgrades across the entire Ethernet Networks.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Research, equipment vendor recommendations, evaluation, selection of Ethernet hardware/software elements.
  • Development and definition of specifications for Ethernet services for customers.
  • Support in marketing and sales of new services and solutions for the eX2 customer base.
  • Architect and Design of networks such as local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), FTTH networks and other communications networks.
  • Lead the Network Engineering plan of record including, business requirements, network strategy, project priority and financial budget plan.
  • Create and document all high-level and detailed network design.
  • Establishes networking environment by designing system configuration, directing system installation and defining, documenting and enforcing system standards.
  • Reviews customer requirements and expectations and works with project management and engineering teams to meet and exceed customer requirements.
  • Continuously updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining personal networks and participating in professional organizations.
  • Work with management to schedule work and manage workload to meet customer and Company expectations.
  • Other duties as defined.

Duties & Skills

  • Exposure to building frameworks based upon SDN/NFV/VN functionality.
  • Exposure to White Box switching.
  • Knowledge of MPLS, L2 and L3 Networks, IP metro Networks, and IPVPN.
  • Strong knowledge and demonstrated experience with standards associated with Ethernet including MEF CE 2.0, MEF 6.1, MEF 10.3, MEF 26.1, MEF 33, MEF 35, EVC Service Types, QoS, CoS, 802.1AG, and Y.1731, Y.1564, and RFC2544.
  • Knowledge and demonstrated experience with standards associated with Access including ADSL2+, ADSL-bonding, VDSL, VDSL-bonding, eSHDSL, xPON, G.984, G.991, G.992, G.993, G.998, G.8031, G.8032, FTTx, and QoS.
  • Knowledge and demonstrated experience with standards associated with Transport including G.798, G.694, G.8031, G.8032, SONET, DWDM, ROADM, MPLS.
  • Hands on lab test/evaluation experience.
  • Strong technical, analytical, and organizational skills associated with the evaluation, Architecture design and implementation of Access, Ethernet, and Transport Networks.
  • Strong familiarity with a wide-range of the predominant Access, Ethernet, and Transport vendors.
  • Understanding of capacity management and Network modeling.
  • Working knowledge of Access, Ethernet, and Transport EMS systems.
  • Able to fluently communicate plans, alternatives, and recommendations in both written and verbal form.
  • Computer skills including Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Visio used for formulating reports and generating presentations.
  • Knowledge of 802.11 and Ethernet Microwave radio protocols, standards and equipment.
  • Knowledge of voice/VoIP protocols, standards and equipment.
  • Must have detailed understanding of contractual requirements.
  • Demonstrated customer relationship and people skills.
  • Demonstrated excellent communications skills (written, verbal and presentation).
  • Demonstrated excellent organizational skills and be detail oriented.

Qualification & Education

The ideal candidate should have 7-11 years of experience in ISP, IP, MPLS, Metro Ethernet and Layer 2 Network Design.  In depth experience in common ISP IGP, EGP routing protocols, MPLS protocols, MEF standards, Carrier Ethernet 2.0 and complex network design and deployment.   A BS degree in engineering, Information Technology or similar degree is preferred.  An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.  CCNP/JNCIP or CCIE/JNCIE certification.

Other Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent is regularly required to sit; use hand and fingers, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.  The incumbent is required to walk daily on construction sites in rough terrain, and climb ladders and facilities under construction.  The incumbent is occasionally required to stand for long periods of time.  The incumbent may be required to lift and/or move up to 10 lbs. While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent may split time between work in a semi-quiet office environment and on customer sites, where there is moderate to occasional great noise levels.

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret engineering and construction drawings and specifications, common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and other documents.  Communicates effectively in both oral and written English technical language, both in interpreting requirements and providing reports and mentoring.  Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.  Ability to interpret a variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
