Massachusetts Town Achieves Lightning-Fast Internet Speeds With Publicly Owned Fiber Optic Network

Omaha, NEB., February 14, 2018 – The Town of Mount Washington – Massachusetts’ third smallest town – is enjoying the fastest internet speeds in Berkshire County following the deployment of a town-owned fiber optic network. Late Fall 2017, eX² Technology, in partnership with White Mountain Cable Construction LLC, completed the turn up and testing of network electronics and lit the active Ethernet network that has drastically improved internet and cell service connectivity throughout the town of 146 homes.

Located within the Mount Washington State Forest, the previously underserved town took the necessary steps to provide its community with the critical broadband services that otherwise would not exist. The Governor signed a bill in January 2016 allowing Mount Washington the authority to build and operate the infrastructure. The town has ownership of the network and has selected a third-party service provider to offer end services to subscribers. While gigabit level connectivity is available to Mount Washington subscribers, most opted for 500 megabits per second (Mbps).

“To say the town is thrilled with the lightning-fast Internet speeds is an understatement,” said Gail Garrett, Select Board Member, Town of Mount Washington. “Before, we experienced sporadic connectivity in Mount Washington. Now, we have the fastest speeds in the county.”

eX² Technology completed the outside plant design, pole attachment agreements, permitting and headend, network and optical network design.

“This project is a great example of what high public involvement, a little hard work and excellent execution can do for an underserved rural community,” said Jayson Swope, Vice President, Engineering, eX² Technology. “We take great pride in serving the people of Mount Washington.”

White Mountain Cable Construction provided fiber optic construction services and material procurement as well as fiber optic splicing, termination and testing on the project. It maintain the network on behalf of the Town of Mount Washington.
