Outside Plant Engineer - Chicago

Position Summary

eX² Technology is searching for an ambitious, experienced Outside Plant (OSP) Engineer. This individual will focus on the design, engineering and construction of communication networks for public and private entities. This individual must have strong communication and customer relation skills. Detailed knowledge of communications networks and construction methods are required. The success of eX² Technology hinges on our ability to deliver on contractual commitments to our customers. The selected candidate must bring a strong, verifiable track record of managing large networks with a high level of customer satisfaction.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Responsible for designing communications networks, both aerial and underground, in rural, suburban and urban settings.

  • Prepares permit and construction drawings.

  • Prepares permit applications to be submitted to right-of-way owners.

  • Provide inspection and QA/QC on construction activities to ensure the communications network is installed in accordance with contractual and permit requirements.

  • Ensure all work is performed safely.

  • Must have detailed understanding of contractual requirements. Reviews customer requirements and expectations and works with project management and engineering teams to meet and exceed customer requirements.

  • Prepares regular reports to document production.

  • Continuously updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining personal networks and participating in professional organizations.

  • Work with management to schedule work and manage workload to meet customer and Company expectations.

  • Other duties as defined.

Skills & Experience

  • Thorough knowledge of communications systems.

  • Able to interpret drawings and schematics, including highway prints.

  • Knowledge of codes, standards, requirements and guidelines for communications systems.

  • Knowledge of easement, right-of-way and permit documents.

  • Knowledge of traffic control practices.

  • Knowledge of telecommunications inside and outside plant infrastructure design.

  • Knowledge of methods of aerial and underground construction of communications systems.

  • Knowledge of safety rules and regulations including OSHA.

  • Knowledge of AutoCAD and/or Microstation is a plus, but not a requirement.

  • Demonstrated customer relationship management skills.

  • Demonstrated excellent people skills.

  • Demonstrated excellent communications skills (written and verbal).

  • Demonstrated excellent organizational skills and be detail oriented.

Qualification & Education

  • The ideal candidate should have a minimum of 2 years of experience in the communications, construction or engineering industries. 

  • Must have extensive knowledge of communications systems, engineering, permitting and construction methods. 

  • A bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction management or related field is required.  An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered. 

  • BICSI RCDD Certification and/or BICSI OSP certification are a plus.

Other Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent is regularly required to sit; use hand and fingers, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The incumbent is required to walk daily on construction sites in rough terrain and climb ladders and facilities under construction. The incumbent is occasionally required to stand for long periods of time. The incumbent may be required to lift and/or move up to 10 lbs. and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 lbs. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions. While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent may split time between work in a semi-quiet office environment and on customer sites, where there is moderate to occasional great noise levels. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret engineering and construction drawings and specifications, common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and other documents. Communicates effectively in both oral and written English technical language, both in interpreting requirements and providing reports and mentoring. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret a variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. The candidate must have a valid driver’s license and pass a mandatory drug test.
