Livingston County, MI is located in Southeast Michigan and is home to more than 180,000 people, with convenient access to Detroit, Lansing, Ann Arbor and Flint metropolitan areas. As the region experiences continued growth across its service and industrial sectors, Livingston County invested in a community-owned fiber network designed to improve economic development, expand broadband access and support emerging technologies.
In 2022, Livingston County selected eX² to design and build a 120-mile middle-mile Michigan fiber network with additional micro-conduit capacity to support future last-mile Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) service providers. The Livingston County fiber network provides high-capacity middle-mile data transport with connectivity opportunities for homes, businesses, community anchor institutions and other destinations throughout the region. Available Livingston County dark fiber and micro-conduit infrastructure also creates opportunities for service providers and other network operators looking to expand their reach in Southeast Michigan.
Built for more than broadband expansion, this future-ready infrastructure is positioning Livingston County at the forefront of next-generation networking. The county is leveraging its middle-mile fiber network and conduit system to establish a quantum test bed initiative, where researchers and technology partners can explore quantum communications, secure data transmission and advanced network architectures.
With high-capacity, low-latency pathways and scalable fiber infrastructure, the network creates an environment where broadband expansion, advanced research and economic development can work together. Its strategic location further positions Livingston County as a regional hub for connectivity and technology innovation.
